Trail de la Forêt de Tronçais
ABOUT
About Trail de la Forêt de Tronçais
The Trail de la Foret de Troncais is a 38-kilometer trail race with 600 meters of elevation gain through the Troncais Forest, in the Allier department. This event crosses the finest oak forest in Europe, an exceptional woodland whose multi-century sessile oaks constitute a unique natural heritage, classified as a Forest of Exception by the French National Forestry Office.
The Troncais Forest extends over 10,000 hectares in the heart of the Bourbonnais bocage, forming an island of wild nature in a landscape of meadows and crops. Its sessile oaks, some over 400 years old, reach impressive heights and diameters. The Troncais stands, with their straight and slender trunks, are sought after by the world's finest coopers for manufacturing barrels for prestigious wines and spirits.
The Trail de la Foret de Troncais course winds beneath the canopy of giant oaks, in an atmosphere of a vegetal cathedral where light filters through the foliage in golden beams. The trails follow forest avenues laid out by Colbert in the seventeenth century, loggers' cutting paths, and hiking trails connecting the most remarkable parcels of the forest.
With 600 meters of elevation gain over 38 kilometers, the profile is accessible and regular. The Bourbonnais bocage relief, with its rounded hills and peaceful valleys, offers rolling terrain without major difficulties. The terrain is pleasant: forest paths carpeted with fallen leaves, soft earth trails through undergrowth, and passages over wooden bridges spanning streams. The forest is, however, large enough that navigation can be a concern, as the deep undergrowth can look similar over the kilometers.
The Troncais Forest is an ecosystem of exceptional richness. The oak stands shelter abundant forest fauna: deer, roe deer, wild boar, badgers, and martens. The ponds of Saint-Bonnet and Pirot, set within the forest, host colonies of grey herons and mallard ducks. Springs and streams crisscrossing the undergrowth sustain luxuriant vegetation of ferns, mosses, and lichens.
The Trail de la Foret de Troncais passes through forest parcels with evocative names: the Futaie Colbert, the Biological Reserves, the Rond de Morat. Each parcel has its character, its remarkable trees, and its history. Runners discover named and identified oaks, true vegetal monuments whose circumference sometimes exceeds six meters.
Aid stations honor Bourbonnais gastronomy: potato pate, Charroux mustard, Bourbonnais cheeses, and Saint-Pourcain wine. The atmosphere is that of a pastoral and convivial race, where the forest's tranquil beauty and the volunteers' generosity create an atmosphere of well-being and sharing. The Trail de la Foret de Troncais is an ode to forest nature, a race for lovers of trees and the silence of the woods.
