Trail des Citadelles

The Trail des Citadelles is a 74-kilometer trail race with 4,200 meters of elevation gain, taking place in the Ariege department, starting from Lavelanet. This race takes its name from the Cathar citadels that punctuate the course, those ruined castles perched on vertiginous rocky pinnacles that were the last bastions of Cathar resistance in the 13th century. The Trail des Citadelles is much more than a trail race: it is a journey through time, a run through history across the Ariege mountains.

The course is designed to link the most iconic Cathar sites of Ariege. Runners pass near or at the foot of legendary castles whose silhouettes stand outlined against the sky. Montsegur, the most famous among them, perched at 1,207 meters on its rocky pog, is the symbol of the Cathar tragedy. Roquefixade, with its ruins clinging to a dizzying cliff, offers a striking panorama. Puivert, better preserved, evokes the courts of love of the troubadours. Each castle is a waypoint of memory on a course that tells eight centuries of history.

The 4,200 meters of elevation gain match the tortured geography of the Pyrenean foothills. The course strings together climbs toward the rocky pinnacles where the citadels stand, then plunges back into wooded valleys before climbing again to the next spur. This roller-coaster profile is particularly demanding, with legs never getting the chance to recover on extended flat sections. The climbs toward Cathar sites are often steep and spectacular, following trails carved into rock.

The terrain is varied and technical. Runners move along forest trails through beech and oak woods, exposed ridge paths offering panoramic views of the Pyrenean chain, passages over limestone slabs, and undergrowth trails covered in leaves. Certain sections are particularly technical, with rocky passages and steep descents demanding agility and concentration.

The beauty of the Ariege landscapes is a major asset of this race. The eye travels from snow-capped Pyrenean peaks to verdant foothill ridges, deep forests, and grey stone villages that seem unchanged since the Middle Ages. The southern light, ever-changing and dramatic, magnifies the Cathar ruins and gives the landscape a cinematic dimension.

Aid stations are set up in historically charged locations, and volunteers, passionate about their territory, readily share anecdotes about the castles and local legends.
