UltrAriège
ABOUT
About UltrAriège
UltrAriege is a 110-kilometer ultra trail race with 6,500 meters of elevation gain, taking place in the Ariege department in the heart of the Pyrenees. The start and finish are in Auzat, a mountain village situated in the upper Vicdessos valley, dominated by peaks exceeding 3,000 meters. This race is one of the most demanding in the Pyrenees, a high-mountain challenge in one of the wildest and least frequented territories of the Pyrenean chain.
Ariege is the quintessential Pyrenean department: mountainous, wild, and authentic. Less well-known than the Hautes-Pyrenees or the Pyrenees-Atlantiques, Ariege nevertheless offers some of the most grandiose landscapes in the chain. The upper Vicdessos valley, from which UltrAriege departs, is a territory of glacial cirques, altitude lakes, primeval forests, and sharp peaks that evoke the great wild mountains of the world.
The 6,500 meters of elevation gain make UltrAriege one of the most vertical races in the Pyrenees. The course chains together ambitious ascents toward passes and ridges situated between 2,000 and 2,800 meters altitude. Some climbs are impressively steep, forcing runners to use their hands on equipped passages or off-trail sections. The descents match: technical, rocky, sometimes vertiginous, they demand total mastery and constant concentration.
The course crosses landscapes of exceptional wildness. The mountain tarns, glacial lakes of deep blue nestled in granite cirques, are among the most beautiful in the Pyrenees. Runners move amid isards, those agile and graceful Pyrenean chamois, and under the gaze of bearded vultures, those immense raptors that have been successfully reintroduced in the Ariege Pyrenees. The high-altitude flora, with its rhododendrons, gentians, and edelweiss, colors the alpine pastures with vivid touches.
The historical and cultural dimension of Ariege enriches the race experience. The department is the land of the Cathars, and the vestiges of this tragic civilization are present in the landscape. The region's prehistoric caves, including Niaux with its cave paintings dating back 14,000 years, testify to a millennia-old human presence in these mountains. Pastoralism, still very much alive in Ariege, gives the alpine pastures a human and warm dimension.
Race conditions on UltrAriege are among the most demanding in the Pyrenees. The course's high altitude, combined with the wild and isolated character of certain sections, demands solid self-sufficiency and high-mountain experience. Pyrenean storms, sudden and violent, can break without warning and transform race conditions within minutes. Nighttime cold at altitude is a factor not to be underestimated, even in midsummer.
Auzat and the Vicdessos valley welcome runners with authentic mountain generosity. Aid stations offer Ariege specialties: millas corn cake, garbure soup, mountain cheese, and local charcuterie. UltrAriege is an extreme adventure in an exceptional natural setting, a race aimed at the most seasoned ultra-trail runners, those who seek total commitment in the high Pyrenean mountains. It is a race of truth, where the mountain makes no concessions.
