The Trail de la Montagne Noire is a 45-kilometre event with 2,000 metres of positive elevation gain crossing one of the most little-known and most captivating massifs in southern France. Starting from Mazamet, a historic textile town nestled at the foot of the Montagne Noire's southern slope, this race explores a transitional territory between the Mediterranean Languedoc and the western foothills of the Massif Central. The Montagne Noire owes its name to the thick forest cover of beech, fir, and spruce that darkens its northern slopes, creating a striking contrast with the south-facing slopes covered in garrigue and holm oaks bathed in Mediterranean light.
The course follows trails that crisscross this massif culminating at the Pic de Nore (1,211 m), the highest point in the Aude department. Runners traverse dense, deep forests where light filters through the canopy creating almost unreal atmospheres, before emerging onto windswept ridges offering 360-degree panoramas encompassing the Lauragais plain, the snow-capped Pyrenees, the Corbières hills, and sometimes even the Mediterranean on clear days. The diversity of environments crossed is remarkable: cathedral-like beech forests on the northern slope, heather and broom moorlands on the ridges, chestnut groves and vineyards on the southern slope, wetlands and peat bogs on altitude plateaux.
The Montagne Noire is inseparable from the history of the Canal du Midi, a 17th-century engineering masterpiece inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was from this massif that Pierre-Paul Riquet conceived the water capture system feeding the canal, an ingenious network of channels and dams, some of which are still visible along the course. This heritage dimension gives the race a rare historical depth, with every stream crossed recalling the hydraulic genius that made it possible to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Runners also pass through villages where the textile industry left its mark, with imposing wool-processing factories that made Mazamet's fortune in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The 2,000 metres of positive elevation gain are distributed across a rolling profile characteristic of medium mountains, with progressive climbs interspersed with false flats and technical descents on sometimes slippery forest trails. The terrain alternates between singletrack in undergrowth on soft leaf-litter soil, ridge paths exposed to the Autan wind, and forest tracks allowing runners to pick up speed on descending portions. Hydration management is facilitated by the numerous springs and fountains along the course, a legacy of the hydraulic network established for the Canal du Midi.
For international runners, the Trail de la Montagne Noire offers a gateway into the deep Languedoc, far from the usual tourist circuits. Mazamet is accessible from Toulouse (1h15 by motorway) or Carcassonne (45 minutes), both cities with international airports. The region offers exceptional cultural heritage with the neighbouring Cathar fortresses of Lastours and Saissac, the medieval city of Carcassonne, and the Canal du Midi. Accommodation in bed-and-breakfasts in mountain villages allows discovery of generous Occitan gastronomy — cassoulet, duck confit, Pyrenean cheeses, Cabardès and Minervois wines — and a vibrant local culture expressed through markets, village festivals, and the singing accent of the Midi.
