Trail des Volcans du Cantal

The Trail des Volcans du Cantal is a 62-kilometer trail race with 3,200 meters of elevation gain through the Cantal Mountains, in the heart of Europe's largest stratovolcano. This event crosses a grandiose volcanic landscape of radial glacial valleys, cirques, airy ridgelines, and high-altitude pastures that make the Cantal one of the wildest and most spectacular territories in metropolitan France.

The Cantal volcano is a colossal edifice, the largest in Europe by its 70-kilometer diameter. Active between 13 and 3 million years ago, it was dismantled by glacial erosion that carved the radial valleys extending from center to periphery like the branches of a star. The Plomb du Cantal, at 1,855 meters, and the Puy Mary, at 1,787 meters, are the principal peaks emerging from this eroded volcanic structure.

The Trail des Volcans du Cantal course is a grand tour of the massif's ridges and valleys. Runners climb the rocky aretes connecting the summits, overlooking deep valleys where herds of Salers cattle, with their mahogany coats, graze. The ridge passages, sometimes exposed and airy, offer 360-degree panoramas over the Auvergne mountains, the Sancy, the Forez range, and, in clear weather, the Alps.

The 3,200 meters of elevation gain make this one of the most demanding races in Auvergne. The climbs are long and sustained, with sections of 500 to 700 meters of elevation gain in a single stretch on grassy or rocky slopes. The descents, often technical on ridgelines and through rocky corridors, test legs and concentration. The terrain is varied: mountain trails on ridges, transhumance paths through summer pastures, beech undergrowth passages, and peatland crossings.

The Cantal is a territory of centuries-old pastoralism. The burons, those former high-altitude cheese dairies where shepherds produced Cantal and Salers cheeses during summer grazing, dot the landscape with their dark stone silhouettes. Some of these burons have been restored and serve as aid stations or shelters for runners, offering authentic hospitality and exceptional cheese products.

The Cantal massif's fauna is rich and diverse. Chamois, reintroduced in the 1970s, roam the rocky ridges. Mouflon traverse the grassy slopes. The bearded vulture, currently being reintroduced, may soon soar over these valleys again. Marmots, stoats, and foxes are familiar companions for runners on the high ridges.

Aid stations are a race highlight, featuring Cantal terroir products: Cantal entre-deux, Salers, fresh tome for truffade, and Cantal gentiane liqueur. The atmosphere is that of an authentic mountain race, where the terrain's harshness is softened by the warmth of Auvergne hospitality.
