Trail des Millevaches

The Trail des Millevaches is a 55-kilometer race with 1,800 meters of elevation gain, starting from Meymac in Corrèze. The Millevaches plateau, whose name derives not from cows but from the Gaulish "melo vacuo" meaning "a thousand springs," is the water tower of the Massif Central. Perched between 700 and 980 meters altitude, this vast granitic plateau gives birth to the Vézère, the Corrèze, the Creuse, and the Vienne — four major rivers that irrigate central-western France.

The course crosses the heart of the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park, one of the least densely populated territories in France. Runners move through a landscape of high-altitude moorland and peat bogs, beech and fir forests, wet meadows scattered with narcissus in spring and heather in autumn. Trails follow peaty streams with amber-colored water, cross mossy granite boulder fields, and skirt trembling peat bogs where sphagnum moss and sundew plants compose a fragile ecosystem inherited from the ice ages.

The 1,800 meters of elevation gain accumulate through regular undulations, characteristic of this plateau relief carved by erosion. The climbs are rarely long but constant, the descents often wet and slippery. The terrain is typically Limousin: granite trails scattered with rounded boulders, muddy sunken lanes bordered by pollarded beech hedges, crossings of spongy meadows where feet sink with every stride, passages over granite slabs covered with moss. The plateau weather is capricious — fog, fine rain, and wind are frequent companions even in summer, and temperatures remain cool due to the altitude.

Meymac is a character town with remarkable heritage. Its Benedictine Abbey of Saint-André, founded in the 11th century, today houses a contemporary art center that creates a surprising dialogue between Romanesque stone and modern creation. The 15th-century grain hall, turreted houses, and cobbled lanes bear witness to the past prosperity of this market town. The Millevaches plateau is the land of Limousin cattle breeders — a bovine breed renowned worldwide for the quality of its beef — and isolated farms with grey slate roofs punctuate a landscape of majestic solitude.

For international runners, the Trail des Millevaches is a plunge into the deepest and most authentic France. This territory, far from any international airport or motorway, requires a logistical effort to reach — Limoges and Brive are the nearest high-speed train stations — but rewards the traveler with total immersion in an end-of-the-world landscape. The solitude of the moors, the silence broken only by wind and streams, the robust gastronomy of the Limousin — clafoutis, potato pâté, Limousin beef — make this race an experience of total disconnection and return to essentials.
