Ultra Trail des Baronnies

The Ultra Trail des Baronnies is a 90-kilometer race with 4,500 meters of elevation gain that winds through the Baronnies provençales massif, a secret and unspoiled territory in the southern Drôme, on the border of the Hautes-Alpes and Vaucluse departments. Starting from Buis-les-Baronnies, the small capital of this land of lavender and linden trees nestled in a deep valley, runners discover one of the last expanses of wild nature in inland Provence — a labyrinth of limestone mountains, narrow gorges, and arid plateaus that mass tourism has never reached.

The Baronnies provençales are a mid-mountain massif whose relief mostly ranges between 800 and 1,500 meters, with the neighboring Mont Ventoux as its highest point. The landscape is shaped by a tortured geology: tightly folded limestone ridges running east to west create a succession of parallel crests and valleys that give the course its characteristic sawtooth profile. Runners tackle short but steep climbs on dazzling white limestone trails, separated by descents into shaded combes where streams flow between boxwood hedges and downy oaks.

The Baronnies territory has been classified as a Regional Natural Park since 2015, in recognition of its exceptional landscape quality and biodiversity. Runners cross lavender and lavandin fields whose perfume fills the summer air, centuries-old olive groves clinging to dry-stone terraces, and holm oak forests sheltering remarkable wildlife: griffon vultures successfully reintroduced in the Eygues gorges, golden eagles, and short-toed snake eagles. The villages along the route — Sainte-Jalle, Mollans-sur-Ouvèze, Propiac — are gems of honey-colored stone with narrow lanes, often crowned by the ruins of a medieval castle.

The Ultra Trail des Baronnies takes place in a transitional climate between Mediterranean Provence and Alpine influences. Summers are hot and dry, but the altitude and the deep-set valleys create cooler microclimates that temper the sun's intensity. Heat and hydration management remain a major challenge, however, especially on south-facing sections along the bare limestone ridges. Summer nights, clear and starry in this sparsely urbanized territory, offer exceptional night-running conditions under a sky rated among the purest in France for astronomical observation.

For international runners, the Ultra Trail des Baronnies is an invitation to discover an authentic and little-known Provence, very different from the postcard images of the Côte d'Azur. Buis-les-Baronnies is accessible from the Rhône Valley (Montélimar, Orange) or from Gap and the Hautes-Alpes. The region offers a preserved Provençal art de vivre — truffle markets, Nyons olive oils (AOC), Côtes du Rhône wines — and genuine mountain hospitality. It is an ultra of character, demanding in terrain and heat, but rewarded with total immersion in a wild and fragrant Provence.
