ABOUT

About Trail des Abers

The Trail des Abers is a 42-kilometer trail race with 800 meters of elevation gain that starts from Landeda, in northern Finistere. This event takes its name from the abers, the deep and narrow estuaries typical of the northern Finistere coast, where rivers merge with the sea in a landscape of dunes, rocks, and coastal meadows of serene beauty.

The Cote des Abers, stretching from Portsall to Aber Wrach, is one of the most preserved coastlines in Brittany. The three great abers that cut into the coast, the Aber Wrach, the Aber Benoit, and the Aber Ildut, are miniature fjords, arms of the sea that penetrate deep into the land, creating a unique amphibious landscape where fresh and salt water mix to the rhythm of the tides.

The Trail des Abers course follows the GR 34 coastal path and the trails that border the banks of the abers. Runners move between white sand dunes, seaweed fields exposed at low tide, granite rocks sculpted by erosion, and glasswort meadows that line the estuaries. The terrain is varied but relatively non-technical, with sandy passages, grassy trail sections, and some rocky portions.

With 800 meters of elevation gain over 42 kilometers, the profile is moderate but constant. The absence of major climbs is compensated by the perpetually undulating coastal relief and the additional effort required by passages through the soft sand of the dunes. The wind, ever-present on this exposed coast, can be a significant difficulty factor, particularly on west-facing sections.

Landeda, the starting commune, shelters the mouth of the Aber Wrach, one of the most picturesque abers. Its marina, nestled in a green setting, and the Sainte-Marguerite peninsula, with its classified dunes and panoramic view over the Iles Vierges archipelago, provide an enchanting setting. The Ile Vierge lighthouse, the tallest stone lighthouse in Europe at 82 meters, is visible from numerous points along the course.

The Trail des Abers crosses landscapes marked by the maritime history of Brittany. Former kelp-harvesting ports, soda kilns where seaweed was once burned to extract iodine, granite crosses that have marked the coastline for centuries: all are testimonies of a centuries-old maritime culture. Runners also pass the site of the Amoco Cadiz shipwreck, a solemn reminder of the fragility of this marine environment.

The atmosphere of the Trail des Abers is that of a human-scale race, carried by passionate volunteers and a spirit of conviviality typical of Brittany. Aid stations offer local products, and the finish is celebrated in a festive and warm atmosphere. This event is ideal for runners seeking an accessible yet authentic coastal trail, in one of the most secret and beautiful corners of Brittany.
