Course
The Trail du Bassin d'Arcachon is a 48-kilometer race with 500 meters of elevation gain that circles one of Europe's most beautiful lagoons, on the Atlantic coast of the Gironde department. The Arcachon Bay, a vast semi-enclosed body of water spanning 155 km² at high tide, is a unique ecosystem where maritime pine forests, salt meadows, sandbanks, oyster parks, and timeless oyster-farming villages all converge.
The course follows the shores of the bay, crossing a mosaic of coastal and forest landscapes. Runners take trails winding through the maritime pine forest, planted in the 19th century to stabilize the dunes and drain the marshes. The air perfumed with resin, the golden light filtering between the straight trunks, and the ground carpeted with pine needles create a meditative atmosphere. Coastal sections offer changing perspectives over the bay: the stilt cabins of the Île aux Oiseaux, the oyster parks that emerge at low tide, and the pinasses — traditional flat-bottomed boats — gliding over calm waters.
With only 500 meters of elevation gain, the trail may seem approachable, but the challenges are real. The omnipresent sandy terrain — coastal dunes, sandy forest tracks, beaches — intensely works the calves and ankles. Passages over salt meadows, spongy wetlands covered with halophilic vegetation, add an unexpected technical dimension. Beach sections, where soft sand considerably slows progress, demand careful effort management. Summer heat and lack of shade on coastal portions can transform the race into a true endurance test.
The Arcachon Bay is a stronghold of French Atlantic culture. The town of Arcachon, with its Ville d'Hiver neighborhood of 19th-century villas nestled among the pines and its Belle Époque seafront, bears witness to the golden age of seaside tourism. The village of l'Herbe, with its colorful fishermen's huts and Algerian chapel, is one of the most picturesque on the bay. Gujan-Mestras, the oyster capital with its seven harbors, allows visitors to taste bay oysters directly from the producer, feet in the sand.
For international runners, the Trail du Bassin d'Arcachon is an invitation to discover the Atlantic art of living in all its splendor. Bordeaux, a UNESCO city accessible in two hours by high-speed train from Paris, is just forty minutes away. The combination of a nature trail between pines and ocean, tasting fresh oysters paired with Entre-deux-Mers white wine, and the mildness of the Gironde climate makes this race a unique sporting and hedonistic experience in France.
