ABOUT

About Trail du Petit Ballon

The Trail du Petit Ballon is a 52-kilometer trail race with 2,100 meters of elevation gain starting from Rouffach, in Haut-Rhin. This event takes runners from the Alsatian vineyards to the summit of the Petit Ballon, at 1,272 meters altitude, on a course that encapsulates in one day the extraordinary diversity of Alsatian landscapes.

Rouffach is one of the most charming wine-growing towns in Alsace. Its half-timbered houses, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church, and tasting cellars line cobbled streets where the scent of fermenting white wines lingers. The Rouffach vineyard, which produces the Vorbourg and Pfingstberg grand crus, forms the backdrop for the first kilometers of the race, before the trails rise toward the mountains.

The Trail du Petit Ballon course is a progressive ascent from the viticultural foothills to the high-altitude chaumes. Runners first cross terraced vineyards where Gewurztraminer and Riesling ripen in the Alsatian sun, then enter the Vosges forest, a world of beech and fir where light dims and air cools. The climb continues to the chaumes of the Petit Ballon, vast high-altitude pastures from which the panorama opens onto the Bernese Alps, the Black Forest, and the entire Alsatian plain.

The 2,100 meters of elevation gain are distributed across several major ascents, interspersed with descents into lateral valleys. The terrain is varied and demanding: stony vineyard paths, sometimes muddy forest trails, grassy chaumes passages, and technical ridge sections. Effort management is crucial over this distance, as the final climbs can prove particularly punishing for runners who have not paced their energy.

The Petit Ballon, an emblematic summit of the central Vosges, is a place charged with history and traditions. The fermes-auberges dotting the chaumes perpetuate the marcaire tradition, shepherd-cheesemakers who ascend to the alpine pastures each summer with their herds. Farmhouse Munster, made on-site with milk from Vosges cattle, is an exceptional product that runners can taste at aid stations.

The Trail du Petit Ballon appeals through its balance between sporting challenge and heritage discovery. The gradual transition from vineyard to mountain, from wine-producing villages to high-altitude pastures, offers a complete and original trail experience. Runners discover in one day the full richness of Alsace, from its wine terroirs to its mountain pastures, on a course that is also a journey through vegetation zones and the traditions of a unique territory.

The careful organization, warm welcome from Alsatian volunteers, and quality of aid stations make this race a popular fixture for trail runners in eastern France and beyond. The Trail du Petit Ballon is an invitation to discover the Vosges through their most generous face.
