Tavignanu Trail

The Tavignanu Trail is a 33-kilometre trail race with 2,500 metres of elevation gain, starting from Corte, a historic citadel town perched in the heart of Haute-Corse. This intense event takes runners on a journey through the Tavignanu Valley, one of the wildest and most unspoiled valleys on the island of Corsica, where the river has carved over centuries a landscape of deep gorges, crystal-clear pools, and dense forests clinging to mountain flanks.

Corte, the former capital of independent Corsica and home to the University of Corsica, provides a starting point steeped in history. Dominated by its spectacular citadel perched atop a rocky outcrop, the town is the natural crossroads of the main interior valleys of Corsica. The Tavignanu, the longest river on eastern Corsica, rises from the glacial lakes of the Rotondo massif at over 2,000 metres altitude before cascading down the slopes and carving the remarkable gorges that form the heart of this race's course.

The Tavignanu Trail route follows authentic Corsican mountain paths, far from the tourist-laden coastline. Runners climb from the valley through the fragrant maquis — rockrose, myrtle, strawberry trees, and tree heather — before reaching the forests of Laricio pine, an endemic Corsican species whose slender silhouettes characterise the island's mid-mountain landscapes. River crossings of the Tavignanu, whose limpid waters flow over a bed of polished granite boulders, provide welcome moments of freshness during the effort.

With 2,500 metres of elevation gain packed into just 33 kilometres, the elevation ratio of the Tavignanu Trail makes it a formidably technical challenge. Corsican trails, hewn from granite and often lined with unstable rocks, demand constant attention. The climbs are steep and direct, without concession — typical of Corsican mountains that know nothing of forgiving switchbacks. The descents, on granite slabs that can be slippery, require solid technical mastery and sure footing.

The Tavignanu Valley is designated as a Natura 2000 site and forms part of the Corsican Regional Natural Park, reflecting its exceptional ecological value. Runners may spot the bearded vulture, Europe's largest raptor, as well as the Corsican mouflon in the higher zones. The endemic flora, with numerous species found nowhere else in the world, turns every kilometre into a lesson in island botany. The Tavignanu Trail is far more than a race: it is a dive into authentic Corsica — the Corsica of shepherds and chestnut groves, icy torrents and wind-battered ridges, far from the beaches and marinas for which the island is famous.
