ABOUT

About Trail des 1000 Étangs

The Trail des 1000 Etangs is a 45-kilometer trail race with 1,400 meters of elevation gain across the Plateau des Mille Etangs, in Haute-Saone, at the border between the Vosges and Franche-Comte. This event crosses one of the most singular landscapes in France, a lakeland territory dotted with hundreds of ponds carved by Quaternary glaciers, set among forests, heathland, and peatlands of wild and melancholic beauty.

The Plateau des Mille Etangs, nicknamed "little Finland," is a granite plateau situated between 500 and 700 meters altitude, on the southern slopes of the Vosges. More than a thousand ponds, of all sizes, dot this landscape of birch, Scots pine, and beech forests. These ponds, mostly of glacial origin, are connected by a network of streams and channels creating an aquatic ecosystem of exceptional richness.

The Trail des 1000 Etangs course weaves between the ponds, peatlands, and forests that compose this unique landscape. Runners move along trails bordering pond shores, cross wooden boardwalks above wetlands, climb the wooded hills overlooking the plateau, and descend toward new bodies of water. The succession of aquatic and forest landscapes creates a dreamlike atmosphere, especially at daybreak when mist rises from the ponds and wraps the forest in a diaphanous veil.

The 1,400 meters of elevation gain are distributed across short but repeated climbs typical of the plateau's rolling relief. The terrain is varied and often wet: mossy forest trails, boardwalk passages through peatlands, dirt paths between ponds, and climbs over granite outcrops. The omnipresent wetlands can make trails slippery and muddy, adding a technical dimension to this outwardly peaceful race.

The Plateau des Mille Etangs is a major ecological conservatory. The peatlands shelter rare and protected plant species, such as sundews, cotton grass, and cranberries. The ponds are home to diverse aquatic fauna, including pike, tench, and green frog populations. The birch and pine forests, bathed in northern light, provide habitat for deer, roe deer, and numerous bird species.

Aid stations introduce the products of the Franche-Comte and Vosges terroir: cancoillotte, Morteau sausage, forest honey, and brimbelle tart. The atmosphere is that of a nature race, intimate and benevolent, carried by volunteers passionate about preserving their territory. The Trail des 1000 Etangs is a unique trail experience in France, an immersion in an enchanting lakeland landscape that transports runners to a world outside of time.
