ABOUT

About Trail des Aiguilles Rouges

The Trail des Aiguilles Rouges is a 40-kilometer trail race with 2,800 meters of elevation gain that takes place in the Aiguilles Rouges massif, in the Haute-Savoie department, starting from Vallorcine. This mythical massif, which faces the Mont Blanc chain from the other side of the Chamonix valley, is one of the jewels of the French Alps. The Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, created in 1974, protects an alpine ecosystem of exceptional richness.

Vallorcine is an authentic mountain village situated at approximately 1,260 meters of altitude, in the upper valley of the Eau Noire, very close to the Swiss border. This discreet village, less frequented than its famous neighbor Chamonix, offers a privileged starting point for exploring the northern slope of the Aiguilles Rouges massif. The atmosphere is more intimate, more wild, contrasting with the bustling energy of the world capital of mountaineering located just a few kilometers away.

The Aiguilles Rouges massif takes its name from the rust color of some of its rocks, due to the presence of iron minerals in the gneiss and granites that compose this crystalline massif. The most iconic peaks, such as the Belvedere (2,965 m), the Aiguille de la Flegere, and the Aiguille de la Gliere, offer exceptional panoramas of the Mont Blanc massif. The view of the great north faces of the Chamonix Aiguilles, the Bossons Glacier, and the Mer de Glace from the Aiguilles Rouges ridges is considered one of the finest in the Alps.

The 40-kilometer course with 2,800 meters of elevation gain crosses a mosaic of alpine landscapes. Larch and spruce forests in the lower sections give way to rhododendron and blueberry heathlands, then to close-cropped alpine grasslands and areas of rock and scree at altitude. The route follows technical trails winding between erratic boulders and rock formations characteristic of the massif. Altitude lakes, such as Lac Blanc and Lac du Brevent, are memorable stages along the course.

The difficulties of the Trail des Aiguilles Rouges are real. The 2,800 meters of elevation gain over 40 kilometers imply a high elevation-to-distance ratio that demands good physical condition and an ability to climb efficiently. High-altitude trails are often technical, with passages along rocky ridges, scree crossings, and sections where hands may be needed for progression. High-mountain weather can change abruptly, and the proximity of Mont Blanc generates complex local meteorological phenomena.

The wildlife of the Aiguilles Rouges massif is remarkably diverse. Chamois and ibex frequent the rocky zones at altitude, while marmots populate the alpine meadows. Alpine ptarmigan and black grouse nest in the altitude heathlands. The bearded vulture, reintroduced in the Alps, can sometimes be observed soaring over the ridges.

For international runners, Vallorcine is easily accessible from Chamonix, 15 kilometers away, and from Switzerland via the Col des Montets or the Mont Blanc Express train. Geneva airport is approximately 90 kilometers away. Accommodation is available in Vallorcine, in Chamonix, and in surrounding villages, with options ranging from campsites to boutique hotels.

Assistance on the Trail des Aiguilles Rouges is a considerable advantage, especially given the technical terrain and altitude. An assistant familiar with the massif and access to the various points along the course can provide essential logistical and moral support. Careful management of equipment, hydration, and nutrition is decisive on this type of demanding course.

The Trail des Aiguilles Rouges is a race that offers the rare privilege of running facing Mont Blanc, in a wild and preserved massif. It is an unforgettable visual and sporting experience, in the heart of one of the most grandiose landscapes on the planet.
