ABOUT

About Grand Raid des Pyrénées

The Grand Raid des Pyrenees is the flagship ultra-trail of the Pyrenean range, a 160-kilometer event with 10,500 meters of elevation gain that crosses the heart of the Hautes-Pyrenees between high-altitude passes, glacial lakes, and majestic cirques. Starting from Vielle-Aure in the Aure Valley, this race held every August takes runners on a journey through the most spectacular landscapes of the central Pyrenees, from the Neouvielle massif to the Cirque de Gavarnie, passing by the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and the heights of the Tourmalet.

The course begins in the Aure Valley, at the foot of the Neouvielle massif, a nature reserve sheltering more than 70 high-altitude lakes. The opening kilometers lead runners toward Lac d'Aubert and Lac d'Aumar, turquoise gems set in granite above 2,100 meters. The climb to Col de Madamete (2,509 m) offers a first sweeping panorama of the border ridge with Spain. Hook pines sculpted by wind and izards regularly spotted on the ridges are reminders that this mountain has remained deeply wild. Pyrenean terrain, composed of granite and schist, often provides better grip than Alpine limestone, though ridge passages can be highly exposed.

The Tourmalet crossing is a symbolic moment in the race. This legendary Tour de France cycling pass culminates at 2,115 meters and separates the Campan Valley from the Gave de Pau Valley. Runners approach it not by road but via ridgeline trails that command plunging views over both sides. The descent to Bareges, a spa town nestled in a narrow valley, precedes the climb back toward the Cirque de Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The limestone walls of Gavarnie, rising 1,500 meters high, and the Grande Cascade, the tallest waterfall in France, compose a setting of incomparable visual power.

The nighttime sections of the Grand Raid des Pyrenees are particularly memorable. Crossing the estives -- vast high-altitude pastures where herds graze in summer -- under a starry sky of exceptional purity, far from any light pollution, offers moments of rare grace in the trail world. Passages near the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, home to one of France's most famous astronomical observatories, add a contemplative dimension to the physical effort. The solitude of the high Pyrenean valleys, punctuated by the tinkling of herd bells, creates a uniquely pastoral atmosphere.

To prepare for the Grand Raid des Pyrenees, mountain training is essential, with particular attention to technical descents on rocky terrain. Passes regularly exceed 2,500 meters and Pyrenean weather is capricious: sudden fog, violent storms, and brutal temperature drops are frequent in August. Hydration is a major concern as water sources, while present, can be widely spaced at altitude. Time cutoffs are demanding and regularly eliminate a third of starters. The Grand Raid des Pyrenees rewards its finishers, however, with a total mountain experience in a range that rivals the Alps in beauty while preserving a fiercely authentic character.
