Trail du Caroux
ABOUT
About Trail du Caroux
The Trail du Caroux is a 48-kilometer trail race with 2,600 meters of elevation gain in the Caroux massif, in Herault. This event crosses one of the wildest mountain ranges in southern France, nicknamed the "mountain of light" for the exceptional quality of its luminosity, a territory of deep gorges, airy ridgelines, and fragrant maquis where the region's last mouflon roam.
The Caroux is a gneiss and schist massif rising abruptly above the Jaur valley, at the southern edge of the Cevennes. Its cliffs, several hundred meters high, dominate the Gorges d'Heric and Gorges de Colombieres, two spectacular gashes carved into the mountain by torrents. The Caroux summit, at 1,091 meters, offers an exceptional panorama over the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees, and the Cevennes.
The Trail du Caroux course is a succession of brutal climbs and vertiginous descents exploiting the massif's rugged relief. Runners scale the cliffs via steep trails, cross airy ridgelines with plunging views into the gorges, and descend into valleys where crystal-clear torrent waters wind between gneiss blocks polished by millennia of erosion.
The 2,600 meters of elevation gain make this one of the most demanding races in Herault. The climbs are often steep and technical, with rock passages and narrow trails carved into cliffs. The descents are equally committed, with scree passages and rocky corridors demanding caution and experience. The terrain alternates between mineral mountain trails, maquis paths bordered by tree heather and holm oaks, and passages through chestnut groves on north-facing slopes.
The Gorges d'Heric are the course's jewel. This enclosed valley, accessible only on foot, is a natural paradise where turquoise pools invite swimming between granite blocks. Waterfalls, stone bridges, and abandoned sheepfolds compose a pastoral landscape of timeless beauty. Runners crossing these gorges experience an exceptional trail moment, between effort and wonder.
The Caroux shelters a population of Corsican mouflon, introduced in the 1950s, which have perfectly adapted to the massif's cliffs and ridges. Runners sometimes have the chance to spot these majestic animals, with their spiraling horns, balanced on the rock walls. Golden eagle, eagle owl, and peregrine falcon complete this remarkable mountain fauna.
Aid stations offer Haut-Languedoc terroir products: Saint-Chinian wine, chestnuts, garrigue honey, and goat cheese. The atmosphere is that of a Mediterranean mountain race, intense and warm. The Trail du Caroux is an event for experienced trail runners seeking a high-level physical challenge in a natural setting of wild and preserved beauty.
