Trail de Brocéliande

The Trail de Brocéliande is an enchanting 35-kilometer race with 700 meters of elevation gain that plunges runners into the heart of France's most legendary forest. Located around Paimpont in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, this forest of over 9,000 hectares is the cradle of Arthurian legend: it is here that Merlin the Enchanter was supposedly imprisoned by the fairy Viviane, that the Knights of the Round Table searched for the Holy Grail, and that Morgan le Fay set her traps in the Valley of No Return.

The course follows the mythical trails of this ancestral forest, crossing landscapes of wild and mysterious beauty. Runners skirt the shores of the Paimpont lake, a mirror of water ringed by reeds that reflects the silhouettes of centuries-old oaks and beeches. The trail then plunges into the Gurwant moors, carpeted with heather and gorse, before entering deep stands of timber where light barely filters through the canopy. The passage through the Val sans Retour — the Valley of No Return — a narrow gorge lined with red schist and wild moorland, is the most spectacular moment of the race.

With its 700 meters of elevation gain, the trail offers a rolling profile characteristic of the Breton landscape. The climbs are never very long but follow one another relentlessly, taking sunken lanes bordered by banks covered in moss and ferns. The terrain is varied: forest paths carpeted with humus, ancient stone tracks, passages along schist ridges offering panoramic views over the canopy, and crossings of wetlands on wooden boardwalks. The technical challenge lies more in managing the slippery ground than in the verticality of the course.

Paimpont, a charming village nestled beside its 13th-century abbey, makes for a delightful starting point. The abbey, founded by Benedictine monks, is reflected in the calm waters of the lake and provides a remarkable heritage setting for the race village. The surrounding area is filled with signposted legendary sites: Merlin's tomb, the Barenton fountain whose bubbling waters were reputed to cure madness, and the Golden Tree of the Val sans Retour, a contemporary sculpture commemorating nature's victory over fire.

For international runners, the Trail de Brocéliande offers a unique experience blending sport with immersion in Celtic mythology. Brittany, accessible by high-speed train from Paris in under two hours, captivates with its gastronomy — crêpes, cider, seafood — and the legendary hospitality of its people. To run in Brocéliande is to tread the same paths as Lancelot and Perceval, to breathe the mist-laden air that has inspired centuries of literature, and to live a sporting adventure deeply rooted in the European imagination.
