Trail du Taillefer

The Trail du Taillefer is a 36-kilometer trail race with 2,400 meters of elevation gain that takes place in the Taillefer massif, in the Isere department, starting from La Morte. The Taillefer is a crystalline massif situated south of Grenoble, between the Romanche to the north and the Valbonnais to the south. This relatively little-known massif, dominated by the Taillefer summit at 2,857 meters, is a wild and preserved territory offering remarkable trail running terrain.

La Morte is a small ski resort situated at approximately 1,350 meters of altitude on the western slope of the Taillefer massif. This discreet and authentic mountain village is the ideal starting point for exploring a massif that remains away from major tourist crowds. The tranquility of the place contrasts with the power of the landscapes that unfold as soon as one climbs the trails.

The Taillefer massif is a high-altitude crystalline plateau bearing numerous glacial lakes, which has earned it the nickname "massif of a thousand lakes." Among the most famous, Lac Fourchu, Lac de la Fare, and Lac du Poursollet offer mirrors of water set in rocky cirques of primitive beauty. These altitude lakes, fed by snowmelt and precipitation, are surrounded by close-cropped alpine grasslands and rocks polished by ancient glaciers.

The 36-kilometer course with 2,400 meters of positive elevation gain crosses the different atmospheres of the Taillefer massif. The trails start from the conifer forests of La Morte to progressively climb toward alpine pastures and lakeside plateaus. Snow can persist late in the season on north-facing slopes and around altitude lakes, adding an additional difficulty early in the season. Sunshine is nevertheless good owing to the massif's southern position.

For international runners, La Morte is accessible from Grenoble, approximately 50 kilometers via the Col d'Ornon road. Grenoble is a major university city served by TGV and with an airport.
