The Trail du Vignoble Nantais is a 40-kilometer race with 600 meters of elevation gain held in Clisson, in the Loire-Atlantique department, at the heart of the Muscadet wine region. This event crosses one of France's most distinctive wine-growing landscapes, where hillsides planted with Melon de Bourgogne — the Muscadet grape variety — slope gently down toward the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise and Maine rivers. Clisson, the race's starting point, is a town of surprising beauty, nicknamed the "Little Italy of the West" for its Tuscan-inspired architecture, inherited from the town's 19th-century reconstruction by the Lemot brothers after the devastation of the Wars of the Vendée.

The Trail du Vignoble Nantais course winds through wine-growing hillsides, wooded valleys, and winemaking villages that compose the Nantes vineyard landscape. Trails follow the Sèvre Nantaise, a winding river bordered by willows and poplars, whose meanders have carved deep valleys offering unexpected relief for a region imagined to be flat. Runners cross carefully maintained vineyard parcels, bocage meadows, oak and chestnut woods, and stone hamlets with discreet cellars where Muscadet rests on its lees.

With 600 meters of elevation gain over 40 kilometers, the profile is moderately rolling with regular climbs and descents along the vineyard slopes. Ascents from valley floors to the vine-planted plateaus are short but frequent, creating an undulating profile that works the muscles continuously. Trails vary between well-traced vineyard paths, sometimes muddy woodland tracks along the rivers, and towpath sections with a smoother running surface. The clay soil can become particularly slippery after rain, which is frequent in this region of temperate oceanic climate.

Clisson boasts remarkable architectural heritage dominated by the imposing ruins of its medieval castle, a fortress of the Dukes of Brittany that controlled the border between Brittany and Poitou. The Garenne Lemot estate, an Italian-inspired landscape park classified as a historic monument, with its Temple of Vesta, antique statues, and stone pines, constitutes a unique ensemble in France. The Nantes vineyard itself is a living heritage: Muscadet, a dry white wine aged on its lees, is one of the great white wines of the Loire, and the recently recognized crus communaux — Clisson, Gorges, Le Pallet — bear witness to the qualitative renaissance of this long-underestimated appellation.
