Skyrace des Gorges du Tarn

The Skyrace des Gorges du Tarn is an intense 25-kilometer race with 1,900 meters of elevation gain, starting from Sainte-Enimie in Lozère. With an exceptional elevation-to-distance ratio of 76 meters per kilometer, this skyrace is one of the most vertical in France. The Gorges du Tarn, a dolomitic limestone canyon carved over 500 meters deep between the Causse Méjean and the Causse de Sauveterre, constitute one of Europe's most spectacular landscapes and a breathtaking race setting.

The course is a succession of vertiginous climbs and descents between the canyon floor and the causse plateaus. Runners leave Sainte-Enimie, nestled at the bottom of the canyon at 450 meters altitude, to climb in one sustained effort toward the Causse Méjean ridges at over 1,000 meters. Trails scale the limestone cliffs via passages cut into the rock, narrow ledges overlooking the void, and goat paths clinging to the cliff faces. From the plateaus, the view plunges into the Tarn canyon — a ribbon of emerald water winding between white and ochre cliffs — before diving back toward the river via equally steep descents.

The 1,900 meters of elevation gain over just 25 kilometers impose a muscular effort of extreme intensity. The causse terrain is formidable: razor-sharp lapiaz, unstable dolomite scree, polished limestone trails slippery in both dry and wet conditions, and easy scrambling passages where hands are needed. The descents, often on slopes exceeding 40%, demand impeccable technique and steel knees. Heat can be oppressive in the canyon bottom during summer, while wind blows fiercely on the exposed causse plateaus.

Sainte-Enimie is one of the most beautiful villages in France, clinging to the canyon walls in a site of dramatic beauty. The village owes its name to the Merovingian princess Enimie, who according to legend was cured of leprosy by the waters of the Burle spring. The Benedictine monastery, founded in the 6th century, the cobbled calades lanes, the blond stone houses with blue shutters, and the gardens suspended above the Tarn compose a preserved medieval setting. The Causse Méjean, a karst plateau of lunar aridity scattered with dolines and sinkholes, is the territory of Lacaune sheep herds whose milk is used to make Roquefort cheese.

For international runners, the Skyrace des Gorges du Tarn is a concentrated burst of intensity in an exceptional natural setting. Lozère, although remote, is accessible from Montpellier, Clermont-Ferrand, or Millau — the city of Norman Foster's famous viaduct. This race is aimed at experienced trail runners who seek pure verticality and technical engagement.
