ABOUT

About Trail du Golfe du Morbihan

The Trail du Golfe du Morbihan is a 56-kilometer race with 1,200 meters of elevation gain, starting from Vannes, the capital of the Morbihan department in Brittany. The Gulf of Morbihan, whose Breton name means "little sea," is a vast inland body of water spanning 115 km², dotted with around forty islands and islets, connected to the Atlantic Ocean through a narrow channel. This gulf, ranked among the most beautiful bays in the world, provides an exceptional race setting where land and sea intertwine constantly.

The course circles the gulf along its indented shores, secret coves, and wooded peninsulas. Runners follow the GR 34 coastal path, passing through the oyster ports of Séné and Saint-Armel, the Lasné salt marshes, and rocky headlands offering panoramas over the islands — Île aux Moines, the largest; Île d'Arz, the wildest; and dozens of confetti-like land fragments emerging from the ever-changing waters. Landscapes alternate between holm oak and maritime pine forests, wind-swept coastal moorland, mudflats exposed at low tide where migratory birds stop over, and fine sand beaches nestled in coves.

The 1,200 meters of elevation gain, surprising for a coastal course, are explained by the gulf's highly indented shoreline. Each inlet, each cove demands a descent to the waterfront followed by a climb to the next headland. The terrain is typically Breton: beaten earth trails that can be slippery, passages over granite rocks covered with seaweed at receding tide, sunken lanes bordered by gorse and blackthorn, and crossings of wetlands on wooden boardwalks. The westerly wind, often present, adds constant resistance on exposed sections of the coastal path.

Vannes is a town of art and history whose perfectly preserved medieval ramparts encircle a historic center of remarkable beauty. The half-timbered houses of Place Henri IV, the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, the pleasure port within the old town, and the rampart gardens compose an architectural heritage that makes Vannes one of the most beautiful towns in Brittany. The covered market offers the gulf's signature products: Locmariaquer flat oysters, Pénestin mussels, langoustines from the deep, salted butter, and far breton pastry.

For international runners, the Trail du Golfe du Morbihan is a unique maritime race that reveals one of the natural jewels of the French Atlantic coast. Southern Brittany, accessible by high-speed train from Paris in three hours, captivates with its distinctive luminosity, its megalithic heritage — the Carnac alignments are just a few kilometers away — its marine gastronomy, and the hospitality of its people. Running around the gulf means living to the rhythm of the tides, breathing iodine-rich air, and discovering a territory where the sea has shaped human identity since time immemorial.
