ABOUT

About Ultra Marin - Grand Raid du Golfe du Morbihan

The Ultra Marin, Grand Raid du Golfe du Morbihan, is a 175-kilometer ultra trail race with 4,200 meters of elevation gain, running along the coasts of the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany. The start and finish are in Vannes, the prefecture of Morbihan, a historic city encircled by medieval ramparts and bathed by the waters of the gulf. This race is one of the most original events on the French ultra trail calendar, offering an almost entirely coastal course in a maritime environment of exceptional beauty.

The Gulf of Morbihan, whose name means "little sea" in Breton, is a vast inland body of water dotted with around forty islands and islets. The Ultra Marin course makes a complete loop around this gulf, following the coastline as closely as possible, hugging every cove, every headland, every inlet. Runners move constantly at the water's edge, with unobstructed views of the islands, oyster parks, fishing boats, and tides that transform the landscape every six hours.

The 4,200 meters of elevation gain may surprise for a coastal course, but the Breton coastline is anything but flat. The relentless succession of descents into coves and climbs back up to headlands creates a sawtooth profile that is particularly wearing. Muscles are constantly engaged, never benefiting from long flat sections for recovery. It is a deceptive elevation profile, more taxing than it appears on paper.

The terrain is extremely varied. Runners alternate between technical coastal trails on slippery rocks, passages across sandy or pebble beaches, crossings of wetlands and salt meadows, towpath trails along rivers, and single tracks through maritime pine and oak forests. The tides add an element of uncertainty: certain passages are only passable at low tide, forcing runners to adapt their strategy.

The atmosphere of the Ultra Marin is deeply Breton. Aid stations offer gulf oysters, crepes, far breton cake, and cider. Volunteers welcome runners with the warmth and generosity that characterize the Breton people. The coastal villages along the course pulse with the rhythm of the race, and the encouragement from residents, often stationed outside their homes with lanterns, creates a unique atmosphere, especially during the long hours of night.

Breton weather conditions are a central element of the challenge. Sea wind, rain, coastal fog, and sometimes sea spray add an additional dimension to the effort. But these elements are an integral part of the race's identity and help forge unforgettable memories. Running at sunrise over the Gulf of Morbihan, when the mist lifts and the first rays gild the surface of the water, is a moment of absolute grace.

The Ultra Marin is aimed at endurance-focused and mentally strong ultra-trail runners, capable of managing an effort exceeding 30 hours on terrain that offers no respite. It is a race where perseverance and fatigue management are more important than raw power. The Grand Raid du Golfe du Morbihan is an ode to maritime Brittany, a race where the ocean is the runner's constant companion, from the first to the last kilometer.
