SaintéLyon
ABOUT
About SaintéLyon
The SainteLyon is the oldest trail race in France and one of the most legendary in Europe. Held every first weekend of December, this 78-kilometer night race with 2,000 meters of elevation gain connects Saint-Etienne to Lyon across the Monts du Lyonnais. With nearly 8,000 finishers each year, it is also one of the most popular, attracting a unique mix of elite runners, seasoned ultra-trailers, and newcomers discovering the magic of a winter night race. Created in 1954, the SainteLyon has crossed the decades without losing its soul: that of a collective adventure in the cold and darkness.
The start takes place in the early evening on the streets of Saint-Etienne, an industrial city perched at 500 meters altitude in the heart of the Massif Central. The spectacle of thousands of headlamps switching on simultaneously in the December night is one of the most iconic images in French trail running. Runners quickly enter the Monts du Lyonnais, a succession of wooded hills and agricultural vales separating the two great cities. The terrain, composed of forest roads, farm tracks, and technical trails, is rarely flat: climbs and descents follow each other relentlessly, wearing down legs on an undulating profile that never allows recovery time.
The magic of the SainteLyon lies in its wintry nocturnal atmosphere. In December, temperatures hover between -5 and +5 degrees Celsius, the ground is often frozen or covered in frost, and mud can transform certain sections into skating rinks. Freezing rain or snow is not uncommon, adding a survival dimension to an already demanding race. The oak and beech forests, stripped of their leaves, form silent cathedrals that headlamp beams illuminate with ghostly light. The passage over the Col de la Luere and the descent toward Sainte-Catherine are legendary sections where runners progress in single file, forming a long luminous serpent in the pitch-black night.
The SainteLyon aid stations are the stuff of legend. Volunteers, braving the biting cold, offer hot soup, scalding tea, dried fruit, and encouragement at every checkpoint. The spirit of solidarity that reigns over this race is exceptional: faster runners cheer on those who are struggling, groups form spontaneously to tackle the toughest sections together. Passing through sleeping villages, where only a few window lights suggest life behind shuttered windows, reinforces the feeling of being engaged in an adventure outside of time, a parenthesis between two worlds.
The finish in Lyon, at Parc Gerland or the Palais des Sports depending on the edition, comes at first light for the fastest runners and late morning for the rest. The SainteLyon does not require ultra-trail-level preparation: a solid trail-running fitness base and a few long nighttime training runs are sufficient. Equipment must, however, be adapted to winter conditions: warm clothing, gloves, beanie, a powerful headlamp with spare batteries, and shoes with good grip for mud and ice. The SainteLyon is often the first night race for many trail runners, and the one that gets them hooked on the magic of running through the dark.
