ABOUT

About Trail de la Vanoise

The Trail de la Vanoise is a 65-kilometer trail race with 4,000 meters of elevation gain that takes place in the Vanoise massif, in the Savoie department, starting from Termignon. This exceptional trail crosses the heart of France's first national park, created in 1963, and offers runners total immersion in one of the most protected and prestigious natural areas in the Alps.

Termignon is an authentic Savoyard village located in the Haute-Maurienne, at approximately 1,300 meters of altitude, at the foot of the Vanoise massif. The village preserves remarkable architectural heritage with its traditional stone houses and stone-roofed barns. The Haute-Maurienne is the upper part of the Arc valley, a high-mountain territory where pastoral and mountain traditions remain vibrant.

The Vanoise National Park is home to exceptional wildlife that is the pride of this region. Alpine ibex, successfully reintroduced in the 20th century, are now present in large numbers and it is not uncommon to encounter them during the race. Chamois, marmots, golden eagles, and bearded vultures complete this alpine bestiary. The flora is equally remarkable, with altitude meadows displaying brilliant colors in summer: gentians, edelweiss, rhododendrons, and martagon lilies.

The 65-kilometer course with 4,000 meters of elevation gain is a true condensation of the finest the Vanoise has to offer. Runners move between deep valleys and vast high-altitude plateaus, crossing landscapes that change dramatically with each kilometer. Larch and spruce forests give way to alpine grasslands, then to moraines and the approaches to glaciers. The course offers breathtaking views of the Vanoise glaciers, the Dome de l'Arpont, the Pointe de la Rechasse, and on clear days, all the way to Mont Blanc.

The technical difficulties of the Trail de la Vanoise match its beauty. High-altitude trails traverse rocky passages that demand agility and concentration. Crossings of glacial torrents, fed by melting snow and glaciers, add an additional dimension to the challenge. The climbs are long and steady, with sections where the trail ascends relentlessly over several hundred meters of elevation gain.

Weather in the Vanoise can be capricious. Thunderstorms form quickly in summer, and temperatures can drop sharply at altitude. Runners must be equipped accordingly and ready to face varied conditions on the same course. The high altitude of the route, which regularly exceeds 2,500 meters, can also affect runners unaccustomed to high-altitude effort.

For international runners, Termignon is accessible from Modane, a border town with Italy served by the TGV and located at the exit of the Frejus tunnel. Accommodation is available in the Haute-Maurienne villages as well as in the mountain refuges of the national park, which offer an authentic hospitality experience.

Assistance is particularly important on the Trail de la Vanoise due to the isolation of certain portions of the course and the changing weather conditions. An assistant familiar with the terrain and access to the various points along the course can provide precious logistical and moral support. Managing mandatory equipment, nutrition, and race pacing are key elements of success in this event.

The Trail de la Vanoise is much more than a race: it is a journey into the heart of wild mountains, an experience that leaves a lasting impression on those who venture into it.
