Trail des Falaises d'Étretat

The Trail des Falaises d'Étretat is a spectacular 35-kilometer race with 800 meters of elevation gain, running along the most famous chalk cliffs of the Norman coastline. Étretat, a legendary seaside resort on the Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast), is world-renowned for its natural arches and the Hollow Needle — geological formations immortalized by Impressionist painters including Monet, Courbet, and Boudin, and by writer Maurice Leblanc in the adventures of Arsène Lupin.

The course offers a succession of breathtaking panoramas over the English Channel. Runners follow the coastal path, between sky and sea, skirting the edge of white chalk cliffs that plunge vertiginously into turquoise waters. The passages past the Falaise d'Aval with its famous natural arch, the Falaise d'Amont topped by the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, and the Manneporte — an immense stone arcade that Maupassant compared to an elephant dipping its trunk in the ocean — provide moments of pure emotion for runners.

The 800 meters of elevation gain are concentrated in the climbs back up from the valleuses, those hanging valleys characteristic of the Pays de Caux coast that cut into the cliff face and provide access to pebble beaches. Each descent into a valleuse is followed by a steep climb on chalk paths that can be slippery, especially in wet weather. The sea wind, often powerful on the heights, adds an extra dimension to the effort. The grassy trails that run along the clifftops demand constant attention, as the void is never far away.

Étretat is a jewel of Norman heritage. The seafront, with its ancient caloges — overturned boats that once served as fishermen's shelters — the 19th-century covered market, and the Belle Époque villas scattered throughout the town bear witness to the golden age of seaside vacationing. The Clos Arsène Lupin, a museum dedicated to the gentleman thief, and the Gardens of Étretat, a contemporary art garden perched on the clifftop, enrich the cultural experience for visitors.
