Trail du Luberon
ABOUT
About Trail du Luberon
The Trail du Luberon is a 48-kilometre race with 1,800 metres of positive elevation gain crossing the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, one of the most emblematic territories in Provence. Starting from Apt, the world capital of crystallised fruit and a lively market town nestled in the Calavon valley, this event traverses the ridges and combes of the Luberon massif, a white limestone mountain stretching over 60 kilometres between Cavaillon and Manosque. This massif, classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a distillation of the most authentic Provence: perched villages in golden stone, lavender fields stretching to the horizon, cedar and holm oak forests, red ochre cliffs, and dry-stone bories.
The 48-kilometre course explores both sides of the Luberon and the summit ridge separating them. The north face, turned toward Ventoux and the Alps, is cooler and more wooded, covered with downy oak, Scots pine, and the famous Bonnieux cedar forest, planted in the 19th century and now one of the most beautiful Atlas cedar forests outside North Africa. The south face, in full sun, is more Mediterranean, with its fragrant garrigue, lavender fields undulating under the mistral, and almond trees blossoming in spring. The Grand Luberon ridge, culminating at Mourre Nègre (1,125 m), offers a 360-degree panorama encompassing the Southern Alps, Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles, the Camargue, and sometimes even the Mediterranean on mistral days.
The 1,800 metres of positive elevation gain are distributed across a profile characteristic of medium-mountain Provençal races: progressive climbs from the cultivated valleys toward the limestone ridges, interspersed with descents into the combes and valleys that dissect the massif. The terrain consists primarily of trails on dry, stony limestone soil, DFCI forest tracks, and garrigue singletracks scattered with white stones dazzling under the Provençal sun. The technicality is moderate but constant, with ridge portions exposed to wind and stony descents that test the ankles. The mistral, the region's dominant wind, can blow violently on ridges and northwest-facing slopes, considerably cooling perceived temperatures despite the sunshine.
Apt is a vibrant and endearing Provençal town whose Saturday morning market is one of the most beautiful and well-stocked in Provence. Crystallised fruits, calissons, Luberon truffles, goat cheeses, lavender honeys, olive oil from the Baux valley: the Luberon terroir offers exceptional gastronomic richness that delights runners and their companions alike. The town, founded by the Romans as Apta Julia, preserves ancient and medieval vestiges including the Cathedral of Sainte-Anne and its underground chapels. The former ochre mines of Rustrel, nicknamed the "Provençal Colorado," offer a striking geological spectacle with their red, orange, and yellow cliffs carved by the extraction of natural pigments.
For international runners, the Trail du Luberon is an immersion into the Provence of perched villages and lavender fields, a mythical territory of the French art de vivre. Access is facilitated by Avignon TGV station (1 hour) or Marseille airport (1h15). Accommodation in Provençal bastides, farmhouses amid the lavender, or bed-and-breakfasts in the villages of Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, or Lourmarin — all classified among the most beautiful villages in France — transforms the stay into a living postcard. The race can be combined with a visit to the Sénanque Abbey and its lavender fields, the Roussillon ochre quarries, the Carpentras truffle market in winter, or an excursion into the Côtes du Luberon vineyards. This is a trail that combines sporting effort and epicurean pleasures with the elegance and generosity that characterise Provence.
