Infernal Trail des Vosges
ABOUT
About Infernal Trail des Vosges
The Infernal Trail des Vosges is the most extreme ultra-trail in the Vosges mountains, a 200-kilometer event with 10,000 meters of elevation gain that traverses the Vosges from north to south in a continuous effort exceeding 50 hours for most finishers. Starting from Gerardmer, the pearl of the Vosges, this race created in 2014 pushes the limits of endurance in a mid-mountain range often underestimated, whose deep forests, windswept ridges, and mysterious peat bogs compose a playground as beautiful as it is formidable.
The start is in Gerardmer, a spa town set beside its lake in the heart of the Hautes-Vosges. The opening kilometers lead runners toward the ridgeline that forms the backbone of the massif, through remarkably dense fir and spruce forests. Vosges terrain is distinctive: the chaumes -- vast high-altitude pastures covered in short grass and blueberries -- alternate with dark, humid forests where moss blankets every rock. Trails are often technical, strewn with roots and pink sandstone, the emblematic rock of the Vosges. The passage over the Hohneck (1,363 m), the highest point on the course and second-highest summit in the Vosges, offers a 360-degree panorama of the Alsace plain, the Black Forest, and, on clear days, the Bernese Alps.
The nighttime crossing of Vosges forests is an experience apart. Darkness is total beneath the fir canopy, silence broken only by the murmur of streams and the occasional call of an eagle owl. Peat bogs, relict ecosystems from the Ice Age, line the course with their dark waters and sphagnum moss. The ever-present humidity -- the Vosges are one of the wettest mountain ranges in France -- transforms trails into torrents of mud after the slightest rain. Runners sometimes wade through water for kilometers at a stretch, testing their shoes' waterproofing and their mental fortitude.
The historical dimension of the course adds a unique emotional depth. Runners cross World War I battlefields, pass war memorials, and encounter trenches still visible in the forest. The Vieil Armand (Hartmannswillerkopf), one of the deadliest sites on the Vosges front, is a poignant passage where physical effort mingles with contemplation. Further south, the Route des Cretes, created during the war to connect French positions hidden from enemy view, offers spectacular views of both sides of the massif: the wine-growing Alsace to the east, the forested Lorraine to the west.
The Infernal Trail des Vosges demands serious ultra-distance preparation. The 200 kilometers and 10,000 meters of elevation gain, though on mid-mountain terrain without high-altitude hazards, represent a continuous effort of more than two days. Sleep management is a major challenge: life bases, spaced roughly 50 kilometers apart, offer rest areas, but most runners sleep fewer than four hours total. Humidity, nighttime cold, and mud wear down the body. Equipment must be suited to these conditions: quick-drying clothing, low-cut shoes with good grip, and gaiters for mud protection. The Infernal Trail is an extreme adventure in a mid-mountain setting, proof that an ultra's difficulty is not measured by the altitude of its summits.
