The Trail du Pays Cathare is a 60-kilometre event with 2,800 metres of positive elevation gain that plunges runners into one of the most dramatic chapters of European medieval history. Starting from Lastours, a village dominated by the four Cathar castles of Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine, and Quertinheux, this race follows the trails connecting the perched citadels erected by Occitan lords in the 12th and 13th centuries, before being besieged and conquered during the Albigensian Crusade. Every summit crossed, every ruin glimpsed on its jagged ridge, tells a story of resistance, faith, and tragedy that deeply permeates this territory.

The 60-kilometre course traces an itinerary through the Corbières and the Montagne Noire foothills, arid and wild lands where garrigue competes with Aleppo pine and holm oak forests. The trails used are often those of shepherds and smugglers of old — narrow, stony, winding, carved into the white limestone of the Corbières or the red sandstone of the foothills. Runners pass beneath vertiginous fortresses perched on rocky pinnacles that seem to defy gravity, and cross narrow gorges where streams flow between wild oleander bushes. The contrast between the aridity of ridges battered by the Cers wind and the coolness of shaded valleys creates a rhythmic alternation that structures the effort across the full distance.

The climbs toward fortified sites are often brutal, with gradients exceeding 30% on certain rocky sections. Lastours provides a starting point charged with history and symbolism. The four castles overlooking the village, aligned along a ridge like the vertebrae of a stone dragon, formed one of the most powerful defensive systems in the Midi during the 13th century. The Orbiel valley, carved into sandstone and limestone, harbours vestiges of mining activity dating back to antiquity — the Romans already extracted gold and silver here. The village, with its narrow lanes, medieval bridge, and terraced gardens, offers an intimate and preserved setting that contrasts with the magnitude of the sporting challenge posed by the race.

Access from Carcassonne (20 minutes) or Toulouse (1h30) is straightforward, and the region overflows with remarkable sites to visit: the medieval city of Carcassonne of course, but also the Cathar castles of Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, and Montségur, the Canal du Midi, and the Minervois and Corbières vineyards.
