Trail du Queyras

The Trail du Queyras is a 48-kilometer trail race with 3,100 meters of elevation gain, taking place in the Queyras Regional Natural Park in the Hautes-Alpes. The start is in Ceillac, an authentic mountain village perched at 1,640 meters altitude, at the end of a deep valley surrounded by peaks exceeding 3,000 meters. This race is an invitation to discover one of the most secret and luminous territories in the French Alps.

The Queyras is a unique massif. Located at the far east of the Hautes-Alpes, on the Italian border, it enjoys record sunshine with more than 300 sunny days per year. This exceptional luminosity gives the landscapes remarkable clarity and color intensity. The blue of the sky is of an almost unreal depth, and the larch forests, flower-filled alpine pastures, and schist summits gleam under golden light.

The Trail du Queyras course explores the heart of this preserved massif. Runners move through centuries-old larch forests whose needles turn golden in autumn, alpine pastures dotted with wildflowers, mirror-like altitude lakes reflecting surrounding peaks, and panoramic passes offering spectacular views of Mont Viso (3,841 meters), the Italian giant that dominates the entire Queyras with its perfect pyramid.

The 3,100 meters of elevation gain are distributed in steady, progressive climbs, punctuated by steeper sections toward high-altitude passes. Queyras trails are generally well-marked and maintained, but technicality increases significantly at altitude, with passages over schist scree and narrow trails carved into steep slopes. Descents are varied, alternating between technical forest single tracks and smoother alpine pasture paths.

The vernacular architecture of the Queyras adds a unique cultural dimension to this race. The hamlets along the course consist of traditional wood and stone houses decorated with polychrome sundials, the region's trademark. These villages, among the highest inhabited in the Alps, testify to centuries-old human adaptation to high mountains. Fountains, oratories, and chapels punctuate the course with touching heritage markers.

Race conditions in the Queyras are marked by the high altitude of the course, which mainly runs between 1,600 and 2,800 meters. The thinner air requires adapted effort management. Despite the generous sunshine, temperatures can drop rapidly at altitude, and storms, while less frequent than elsewhere in the Alps, can be violent. Wind on exposed passes is a factor not to be overlooked.

Ceillac is a mountain village that has preserved its soul. No large resort, no concrete sprawl, but wooden chalets, mown meadows, and pastoral life still very much alive. Race aid stations offer local cheeses, mountain charcuterie, and herb pies that are the specialties of this frugal but flavorful high-mountain cuisine.
