Ultra Trail du Sancy
ABOUT
About Ultra Trail du Sancy
The Ultra Trail du Sancy is a 75-kilometer ultra trail race with 3,800 meters of elevation gain, taking place in the Sancy massif in the Puy-de-Dome, starting from Mont-Dore. The Sancy, the highest point in the Massif Central at 1,886 meters, is a former volcano whose rounded forms and U-shaped valleys testify to a tumultuous volcanic and glacial past. This race is a deep dive into volcanic Auvergne, a territory unique in France for its geology, fauna, and flora.
Mont-Dore, a spa town and winter sports resort nestled at 1,050 meters altitude in the valley of the nascent Dordogne river, is the ideal starting point for this Auvergnat adventure. This characterful town, with its Belle Epoque thermal baths, volcanic stone facades, and grand 19th-century hotels, offers a remarkable heritage setting. It is here that the Dordogne has its source, on the slopes of the Puy de Sancy, before beginning its long journey to the Atlantic.
The Ultra Trail du Sancy course explores the massif in all its volcanic diversity. Runners climb the puys, those rounded domes characteristic of Auvergnat volcanism, cross U-shaped glacial valleys, follow crater lakes with dark deep waters, and traverse summit ridges from which the eye embraces the immensity of the Chaine des Puys, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Puy de Sancy, with its rocky ridges and grassy slopes, offers a 360-degree panorama over the heart of France.
The 3,800 meters of elevation gain are accumulated through a succession of climbs and descents following the volcanic relief. The puys, those conical hills, demand short but steep climbs followed by rapid descents, in a sustained rhythm that wears down the legs. Glacial valleys offer more rolling sections but never last long enough for true recovery. The overall profile is that of a long medium-mountain race, demanding through its repetitiveness.
The terrain is surprising for those unfamiliar with Auvergne. Volcanic trails alternate between soft altitude meadows, grassy ridge paths, passages over tormented volcanic rock formations, undergrowth of majestic beech trees, and spongy peat bogs. The volcanic soil, often black and loose, provides pleasant cushioning but can become extremely slippery in rain. Ridge passages, exposed to wind, require good resistance to the elements.
The Sancy's fauna and flora are remarkably rich. Summer pastures host Salers and Aubrac cattle, whose milk is used to make the AOP cheeses that have built Auvergne's reputation: Saint-Nectaire, Cantal, and Fourme d'Ambert. Marmots, introduced to the massif, whistle as runners pass. Yellow gentians, arnica, and wild daffodils color the altitude meadows.
Aid stations at the Ultra Trail du Sancy are a celebration of Auvergnat gastronomy: truffade, aligot, aged Saint-Nectaire, dry saucisson, and gentiane liqueur. The atmosphere is warm and festive, true to Auvergnat hospitality. This race is a magnificent discovery of the Massif Central, a region too often overlooked that reveals here all its volcanic beauty and generosity. The Ultra Trail du Sancy proves that French mountains extend well beyond the Alps and the Pyrenees.
