Trail du Galibier
ABOUT
About Trail du Galibier
The Trail du Galibier is a 35-kilometer skyrace with 2,500 meters of elevation gain, taking place in the Cerces massif in Savoie, starting from Valloire. The Col du Galibier, reaching 2,642 meters, is one of the most mythical passes in world cycling, regularly featured in the Tour de France. But the Galibier is also an exceptional playground for trail running, and this race has harnessed the magic of this legendary pass to create a skyrace of remarkable intensity and beauty.
Valloire, a Savoyard mountain resort at 1,430 meters altitude, is the starting point for this ascent. This village of authentic character, with its stone and wood chalets and Baroque church, offers a charming mountain setting. From the very start, runners embark on a climb that will take them above 2,500 meters, through alpine landscapes of crystalline purity.
The 35-kilometer skyrace format is compact but extremely intense. The ratio of 2,500 meters of elevation gain over 35 kilometers of distance means that runners are climbing or descending almost permanently. There are no false flats, no rest sections. Every meter is a meter of effort, every kilometer a kilometer of verticality. It is this concentration of difficulty that defines the specificity and appeal of the Trail du Galibier.
The course follows high-mountain trails that climb through the flower-filled alpine pastures of the Valloirette valley, then ascend the mineral slopes leading toward the passes and ridges of the Cerces massif. Panoramas are grandiose: views of the Meije and Ecrins glaciers to the south, the Vanoise massif to the north, and the Maurienne valley below. The course's high point, above the Col du Galibier, offers a 360-degree panorama of the highest peaks in the French Alps.
The terrain is alpine and technical. High-altitude trails cross schist scree, close-cropped altitude grasslands, residual snow patches, and wind-exposed ridges. Descent technicality is high, with steep slopes on unstable terrain demanding constant agility and precision. Ridge passages, sometimes airy, add a psychological dimension to the physical challenge.
Weather conditions above 2,500 meters can be extreme. Wind often blows forcefully on passes and ridges. Altitude storms, quick and violent, are a real danger that organizers take very seriously. Cold, even in midsummer, can catch insufficiently equipped runners off guard. Equipment management and the ability to react to changing conditions are essential skills.
The atmosphere of the Trail du Galibier is that of an authentic, human-scale mountain race. Warm and well-stocked aid stations offer Savoyard specialties. Volunteers, often local mountain people, share their passion for this territory with generosity. The Trail du Galibier is a short but intense race, ideal for trail runners who love pure verticality, high-mountain landscapes, and the adrenaline of skyraces. It is a race that goes straight to the point, straight to the summit, straight to the essence.
